For eight weeks, middle and high school musicians across central Ohio have met to develop their skills as jazz musicians in our Columbus Youth Jazz Lab. Students involved in the Lab program are placed into one of our five combos and learn standard jazz repertoire, arranging, improvisation and more with our Jazz Academy teaching artists.

For eight weeks, middle and high school musicians across central Ohio have met to develop their skills as jazz singers in our Columbus Youth Jazz Vocal Lab under the direction of Rachel Azbell and Jasmine Spitzer. The Vocal Lab works to expand each students’ abilities in jazz style, improvisation and overall vocal technique through individual and group instruction with the instructors and with a professional rhythm section.

The Columbus Youth Jazz Girls Project is a month-long music-making program that celebrates female musicians who are dedicated to their music. During each session, we will develop our skills as an ensemble while exploring jazz improvisation and soloing, creating a fun and encouraging space for students to build confidence and courage. Featuring special guest artists and educators, the CYJ Girls Project will focus on musical topics such as jazz improvisation, ensemble techniques, and important females in jazz history. We’ll also explore non-musical topics such as developing confidence, becoming a leader in your school music program and more.

Since 2014, contemporary jazz band Spin Cycle has been bringing their original music to clubs and concert halls across the US and Canada. Co-lead by Scott Neumann and Tom Christensen, the band highlights their flexibility, reach and capacity to surprise their audiences.

Sam's most recent, genre-spanning chamber project Sam Blakeslee & Wistful Thinking - The Long Middle featuring Chris Coles (alto saxophone), Brandon Coleman (guitar), and Matt Wiles (bass), was released on NYC Jazz Record Label Outside In Music on July 30th, 2021 and received critical acclaim from JazzIz Magazine JazzTrail, and Textura publications, among others.
The Zakk Jones Trio is a dynamic group that fluidly blends styles as varied as modern jazz, Americana/country and fusion, often even in the same songs. Between unique arrangements of classic songs/standards and original material, the trio brings any audience a fresh listening experience that's filled with creative improvisations.
Jazz Academy Alum and Hank Marr Award Winner, pianist Aaron Diehl returns to Columbus with a concert full of dazzling and ethereal jazz. This engagement is supported by the Arts Midwest GIG Fund, a program of Arts Midwest that is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional contributions from the Greater Columbus Arts Council and the Ohio Arts Council.
The Columbus Youth Jazz program's annual Swing Sunday event returns for the 2022-2023 season! This year, Swing Sunday will serve as the premiere event for all four Youth Jazz big bands.
Join us for fo/mo/deep, an "eclectic, groove-oriented, funky jazz quartet. fo/mo/deep is a jazz/Funk/Fusion Trio based out of Columbus, OH. fo/mo/deep groove is rooted in the experimental school of the 70s...a time when jazz, soul and funk were one and the same.

As diverse communities across the country hold Juneteenth celebrations and remembrances, it is worth remembering the struggle for freedom is far from over.
The Jazz Arts Group is proud to rebroadcast “Jazz & the Struggle for Freedom,” a concert with conversation featuring Columbus Jazz Orchestra Artistic Director Byron Stripling and Michelle Alexander, legal scholar, award-winning New York Times opinion writer, and best-selling author of “The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness.”
Timely and thought-provoking, the conversation covers issues of race, diversity, civil liberties, and mass incarceration. And musical interludes throughout feature Stripling and a top-flight rhythm section and singers adding melodic counterpoint through jazz, blues, R&B and gospel styles.
